RESEARCH FOR CLIMATE CHANGE AND KNOWLEDGE SHARING
Center of Excellence for Climate Finance Policy
by Purnomo Yusgiantoro Center

Climate change is one of the most pressing global challenges of our time, and addressing it requires significant financial investment and innovative policy solutions. As countries strive to meet their climate commitments under the Paris Agreement,

the role of climate finance has become increasingly critical.

This involves not only mobilizing the necessary funds but also ensuring that these resources are effectively allocated and managed to achieve the desired outcomes.

Indonesia, one of the world’s largest archipelagic nations, is increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

The country faces a range of environmental challenges, and these climate-related risks are affecting not only ecosystems but also communities and key sectors of the economy. Given its commitments to reduce carbon emissions to 32% below the business-as-usual scenario (BAU) and the conditional target to 43% below BAU, Indonesia must find ways to address these challenges while ensuring economic growth and socio-political stability.

Indonesia’s energy sector plays a pivotal role in climate issues. Currently, the country remains highly dependent on fossil fuels, which account for a significant portion of its greenhouse gas emissions. The government has set ambitious targets to reduce emissions, but the development of renewable energy resources has been slow, particularly in remote regions where access to clean and affordable energy is limited. Additionally, many industries still struggle to develop and implement effective sustainability and decarbonization strategies. Effective climate finance mechanisms are essential for funding mitigation and adaptation projects, protecting vulnerable communities, and transitioning to a low-carbon economy.

To address these critical issues, the Purnomo Yusgiantoro Center (PYC), a leading research institution in Indonesia focused on energy, natural resources, and national defense sector, has partnered with the University of Waterloo, one of Canada’s top universities, through the FINCAPES Project (Flood Impacts, Carbon Pricing, and Ecosystem Sustainability). This collaboration is designed to support Indonesia in tackling the growing challenges and opportunities posed by climate change with focus on climate finance as the key area.

A central component of this collaboration is the establishment of RECLICKS, soon to be a Center of Excellence for Climate Finance Policy Research, Education, and Training. This center will play a crucial role in addressing the financial challenges of climate action in Indonesia, especially the clean energy target. By creating innovative financial mechanisms, strengthening capacities, research, and advocating for supportive policies, RECLICKS aims to empower communities, governments, policymakers, researchers and industrial institutions to lead the shift toward clean energy. This initiative also seeks to contribute to Indonesia’s national climate targets, improve energy security, and foster sustainable development in some of the country’s most vulnerable areas.

To become a leading center of excellence in climate finance policy to drive the sustainable transition to a low-carbon economy and accelerate the energy transition in Indonesia.
